About
I am Brian Mills.
A communications specialist and technical writer with seven years of experience: scientific instruments at JEOL USA, B2B engineering at HTS New England, and automotive digital marketing at C-4 Analytics. Before any of that, college radio and a student paper where I covered the Boston Bruins.
Based in Londonderry, NH. Open to fully remote roles.
The path
- 2014 to 2018Merrimack College: a B.A. in Communication and Media Studies, with a Business Marketing minor, in the Honors Program. Vice President of WMCK Radio, weekly Bruins coverage for The Beacon, and communications coordinator for Student Affairs.
- 2018OMICRON electronics: my first role out of college, where I launched a recurring e-newsletter to more than 8,000 recipients. It was the first version of the newsletter work I still do today.
- 2018 to 2019C-4 Analytics: digital marketing for six dealership accounts at once, hands-on Google Ads, weekly analytics, daily client calls.
- 2019 to 2024HTS New England: built the marketing function from scratch, ran it solo for about four years, then grew it into a small team.
- 2024 to presentJEOL USA: product marketing for electron microscopes and related scientific instruments. The 17,000-subscriber JEOLink newsletter, two budgeted campaigns, four social channels, and about eight trade shows a year.
How I work
Plain language. Short paragraphs. Usually behind the camera. I write the questions, shape the edit, and build the systems that keep the work consistent after I move on to the next thing. In the recruitment video I made at HTS New England, leadership is on camera and I am not. That is by preference.
The thread through every role is the same: take what an expert knows, and make it usable for the person who needs it next. The subject changes. The job does not.
Off the clock
I am a lifelong Boston Bruins fan. That is how one of the writing samples here became a ten-year argument about the NHL coach's challenge. I also build small tools for problems I run into, like Purr, the voice-to-text app I used to draft early versions of this site. The instinct is the same on the clock or off it: find the complicated thing, and make it clear.
